Remodeling Your Windows Pays off in the Long Run

When you look for ways to cut costs, such as reducing your utility bill, don’t forget your windows. Not only do older windows contribute to heat transfer that can send your bills soaring, but they can also create other financial issues down the line.

One way to reduce costs overall is to remodel or replace your windows. While there’s the initial cost of the work, especially if you replace the windows completely instead of just repainting them and filling in gaps. But the savings from the effects of those new windows are immediate and can help mitigate the replacement cost quickly.

Tighter Seals, Fewer Leaks, Lower Bills

As windows get older, they develop tiny cracks and gaps where the glass meets the frame. The frame itself can chip and develop gaps, too. Those gaps allow hot air to escape or enter your home, making your HVAC system work harder. This added strain on your HVAC system leads to increased utility bills each month.

You could search all over the window and redo the seals around the glass while filling in gaps around the frame. Or, you could also replace the windows totally. New windows have better seals all around and are in better shape overall. If you were to try to fix the old windows, you’d still have to deal with a structure that’s old at its core, meaning it could develop new issues soon after your initial round of repair work.

Added Insulation

New windows also have added insulation in the glass. If you have single-pane windows now, the replacements will likely be dual-pane. You can still find single-pane windows, but double-panes are now standard.

Those two panes provide much better insulation against thermal transfer than the one pane in your old windows. Your utility usage should go down because you just won’t need to use your heater or AC as much once you have double-pane windows installed.

Newer Windows and Home Value

Newer windows can increase your home’s value. Obviously, that doesn’t sound like cost savings at first. But instead of seeing your home’s value drop year after year because of a shabby exterior, you could see the value go up or at least stay steady.

You will want to choose new windows carefully because you want people to see them, but you also don’t want the windows to stick out so much that they look strange.
